“See You” - A work about “confrontation”.
We create the present in every moment. In every moment we also face goodbyes. Through a story-like vision, the Artistic Director of Hung Dance and choreographer, Lai Hung Chung, writes through dance: “To want or not to want - we are all on the timeline of life, continuously moving forward. Fleeting moments exist because of feelings; every existence builds up to an unknown us”.
Lai Hung Chung extracts the essence of “See You”, creating an atmosphere that penetrates beyond dance – flowing and smooth, sudden and fleeting.
The principal dance style in “See You” is the Hung technique, the “single-point activation” that was developed from the Tai-Chi principles of spiraling and discharging energy. The slowness of Tai Chi allows one to clearly feel the state of the body, the progress of the muscles, the shift of the center of gravity, and the relationship between breathing and the body, gradually maturing the body and mind of the dancer, leading to a flowing calm on stage.
Another element of dance featured in this work is the combination of the street dance technique of popping that needs instant energy. It is used to interpret unpredictable scenes of separation that people face; moments filled with the strongest emotions and physical sensations.
Dancers in monotone costumes move like in a shuttle, gathering and separating in a liberating formation. Dim lighting tones and subtly lit areas create a virtual reality of space, time and mood.
The music uses brass, flute, and electronic instruments to accumulate a sometimes soft and quiet, sometimes chaotic and mysterious atmosphere, narrating abstract concepts and scenes, and bringing out a sense of spatial texture from sound.
The amalgamation of visual and auditory elements presents a rich and varied scene, portraying encounters, separations, reverberations and transformations in the journey of life.
The piece depicts various stories that belong to scenes of farewell from an objective perspective, removing the characters and not telling the events clearly, rather focusing on the feeling of movement. Through this "blankness", a space is reserved for the viewer. There is no need to enter another person’s story on the stage, but through the scenery flowing on the stage, enter the story of oneself. In a subtle way, confront those moments related to "See You" that are engraved in one's own life experience.
